Home from Hospital

I’m home!
I went in to theatre at 2pm on Monday for a microdiscectomy and was back in the ward by about 5:30pm. The anaesthetic they gave me was fantastic - I asked three nurses and the neurosurgeon to marry me in the time that I was waking up!
Seriously, the procedure went as well as it [...]

Surgery Tomorrow

If anyone has been keeping track, tomorrow will hopefully be the end of twenty years or so of back trouble!
I’ll be going into hospital at 10am on April 28th and operated on later that day. I’m scared to death, but looking forward to being pain free and back into life!
And then, hopefully, we can kick [...]

Surgery

Once again, sorry for the lack of content appearing on Chewing Pencils. The situation with my back hasn’t really improved and I’ve spent lots of time flat on the ground or high on pain killers!
Surgery is scheduled for April 28th, which means I’ve got a week and a bit to show some sort of improvement [...]

The Good News and the Bad News…

From October, every time I walk into a room, you will have to bow down in front of me and call me Reverend.
Well, not really, but in the non-cartooning part of my life, I will be ordained by the Baptist Union of Victoria as a recognised and accredited minister of the gospel.
It’s staggering who they [...]

Another back update

Well, it seems that that the epidural injection, as fun as it was, hasn’t worked and I’m back to square one with my back.
The pain is progressively becoming worse and a few times today I endured spasms that more or less paralysed me.
Needless to say, I’ve returned to spending most of my time flat [...]

Thirty Minutes of Pain

Well, I’ve survived the injection, but only just…
I went into the surgery and the doctor laid me face down on the bed before giving me a little anaesthetic in the lower back. With a kindly, “This might hurt a little,” he started to give me the epidural injection.
Well, the pain was excruciating. For the next [...]

Off to Hospital

So, the back is getting no better.
I’m still here on the floor, swimming in pain killers thankful for a wireless network so I can still do a little bit of web work and the like. Sitting down is impossible, so drawing is all but out.
I saw my doctor on Wednesday morning, who then pulled some [...]

How to Draw Caricatures

I’d love to be able to draw caricatures.
But honestly, I suck at it.
My caricatures only resemble the subject if I draw the person from behind, at great distance, in the dark…
But Tom Richmond is brilliant at it. Once again graciously shared his knowledge with a series on ‘How to Draw Caricatures’ over at his Mad [...]

A pain in the…

So, a few days after I returned from my beach holiday, my wife had returned to work and I was dropping my eldest at kindergarten for the afternoon.
The clouds were looking threatening, so despite it only being a five minute walk, we jumped in the car and drove up the road.
As we pulled up out [...]

What’s Been Going On…

Thanks for all the emails and messages asking where I’ve disappeared to over the last few weeks! Be assured that I’m alive and well and the drawing career is progressing nicely.
I’m currently on six weeks leave from my ‘day job’ and so have taken the opportunity to do lots of family stuff. Tomorrow we head [...]
