2007 Chewing Pencils Christmas Cartoon Project!
Published by Matt Glover December 5th, 2007 in Group Projects
Submissions for this project have now been closed. See this post for a list of everyone who entered.
December is here, so it’s time to do another of our Christmas drawing projects!
Right now people all around the world are looking for Christmas cartoons to make their own cards and presents. A cleverly designed site or blog can capture some of this market by making sure their pages, and thus cartoons, are easily found through simple searches on Google and other search engines.
So once again, we’re going to corner the market and gather all the best cartoons right here!
Here’s what you need to know to enter:
- One entry per person.
- All entries need to be a single panel of 10cm wide by 15cm high (roughly Christmas Card size).
- It must contain the word “Matt” in the cartoon somewhere.
- It must be a Christmas cartoon that is family friendly.
- Post your cartoon on your own site, including a link back to here. (Those with no site of their own are encouraged to set up a free blog account through wordpress or blogger. If this is too hard, send a 72dpi file to me and I’ll post it for you.)
- Tell your friends!
Our guest judge this year is Mark Anderson from Andertoons - a horribly talented artist who has one of the best cartoon sites you’re ever likely to encounter.
Both first prize and the ‘people’s choice’ prize is a $25 Amazon voucher, donated by the friendly people behind Chewing Pencils…
You have ten days, starting right now, to get your entry in. Entries close on December 15th. Voting for the “People’s Choice” award will open the same day and close on the 20th December.
Forget your Christmas shopping and get drawing!
Note: Our newsletter provider Zookoda has been sunk by an iceberg and refuses to send out any type of message. My apologies to newsletter subscribers who would normally have received advanced notices of this project.

I definitely agree that Mark has one of the best cartoon sites around… Every time I visit to read the latest cartoon, I try to read the cartoon and leave the site as soon as possible… Otherwise I start looking over it again and getting more jealous by the second.
What a great idea Matt! At the end of November, I posted some free templates for people to print their own colouring cards (http://leesvoice.blogspot.com/2007/11/you-print-it-at-nightshade-creations.html) and I’m already seeing a lot of traffic because of it!
If I get a few minutes to call my own, I’ll see if I can get an entry together for your awesome challenge! (Love the bit about working your name into it!)
Matt, saw this on the daily cartoonist, and sounds like fun. I’ll get the ball rolling with an entry at:
http://www.the-cartoonist.com/TCDC/diesslin07/cp_diesslin.html
I was already creating cartoons for The Cartoon Days of Christmas (TCDC). I’ll encourage the TCDC cartoonists to consider entering as well.
Thanks for adding to the Christmas fun!
Sweet entry Rich.

Rich, take away the glasses and that guy looks scarily like me!

(Many thanks to cartoonist Rich who helped setup this link)
I’d also like to invite you and everyone here to come visit and enjoy our 5th Annual Online Show “The Cartoon Days of Christmas” (TCDC) at http://www.the-cartoonist.com/
Thank you,
VAL
Hey everyone! Sorry I’m a tad late to the party, but I’m really looking forward to taking a look at everyone’s stuff. Except Lynch.
Dale - the very, very, very first website I ever set up was called ‘toondale’. It died a horrible death, but I got a bit of a kick out of seeing the name on the web again!
Thanks for the entries everyone.
And to the too Mike’s, take it outside and sort it out like real cartoonists…
Howdy come to http://www.terryloutoons.com/ and you will see the real Matt! “The Two Lost Wise Men’
I hope I got it right let me know. I haven’t got a clue what I am doing, setting up a web site or the size. I don’t even have a way of knowing how many visit or a way for them to get in touch with me. Even so come and visit!
Looking forward to the contest thanks for having an open invitation. Merry Christmas to all. Robbay
First I’d like to thank Matt for his devotion to helping spread the knowledge of his hard earned craft. Second I’d like to thank “Aprentices are us!” who couldn’t find one for Matt.
Way to go guys, hows that best small business certificate doing. third i’d like to thank the guy who invented cartoon projects, Bored Caveman I think his name was. And last lets give a warm applause to Santa who has to put up with my suggestions every year, stuff like “its not a good idea to hog the attention away from Jesus, the guys got connections” etc..
And finally to my fellow cartoonists and people with stationary, this year when handing out presents to loved ones record the event on a video camera. Next year hand out copies, hey nobody said “its the thought that counts” cant be reused.
Good luck everybody who entered the cartoon competition and Married Christmas.
hi it so great cartoon for holiday
Hello Matt,
Here is my entry, made possible by Rich, who set things up for me from a technical standpoint despite his regular computer suddenly suffering a computer heart attack:

Hi everyone, here is my cartoon, my very first one that I have had the guts to show anyway! So I hope it is suitable for the competition. http://web.aanet.com.au/robandjods/?p=22
