Halloween Group Drawing Project
Published by Greg September 30th, 2007 in Group ProjectsHey guys, Greg here from EEight. With Halloween coming up soon (October 31st), I thought it was a good idea to start another group drawing project. Since Matt’s been a little busy lately, he let me get the ball rolling on this one, so here we go…
Matt has hosted several such projects in the past, and I think they all turned out pretty well. The basic idea is simple: Anyone who wants to participate just draws a cartoon (or as many as you want) related to a specific subject. Then, you post that cartoon (or cartoons) on your website, and link back to Chewing Pencils somewhere on that page.
All participants benefit in several ways:
- You’ll interact with other cartoonists and get a glimpse of other styles.
- You’ll have motivation to get off your butt and draw some cartoons.
- You’ll get a boost in traffic to your site, because your entry will be linked to from the main project page, as well as from search engines (explained below).
- And you just might win something!
The important thing to learn from this project is that you should make a habit of drawing cartoons for special occasions well in advance of the occasion itself. This will help you sell more cartoons by the time that occasion rolls around, and if not sell, at least you’ll get hits from search engines because people will be searching for cartoons related to that occasion. So let’s say, for example, that you begin drawing Halloween cartoons a month before Halloween. That means when there’s about a week left to Halloween, you’ll already have a batch of Halloween cartoons made, which you can try and sell to publishers who want Halloween cartoons in their magazines/websites/whatever… Also, by that time most search engines would have already “crawled” your site and found the new cartoons, so when somebody searches for “Halloween cartoons,” your page will likely show up.
Hopefully I explained it well… Now here are the [simple] rules:
1. Draw any amount of cartoons related to Halloween in any way (please keep them family-friendly, at least for this project).
2. Post them on your blog/site, along with a link back to this post. If you’d like, you can also link to some of the other participants’ entries, so that they all get exposure.
3. Send an e-mail to Greg [at] EEight.com with the subject line “Halloween Group Drawing Project,” and a link to your submission as well as your name. If you don’t have a website but would still like to participate, just send me the cartoon as an attachment and I’ll host it on my own website for you.
The deadline is October 30th, but don’t wait until the last minute to get started! In the end everyone will get to vote for their favorite cartoon, and the winner will get a prize. I’ll announce the prize later, so keep checking back. Now go draw!

What a great idea!!! Count me in!
Sheree
wher i come from we don’t celebrate halloween, and all i know off it is from the tv, i wonder if my cartoon will come off shallow.
Sorry guys, I know Halloween isn’t really celebrated all over the world, but Christmas is too far away from now.
where i come from doesn’t really celebrate Halloween either, but still, its virtually a worldwide acknowledged event. it’s like Christmas, everyone knows what it is, whether we partake in it or not.
I love the idea and just sent off my first cartoon for the Group.
Awesome. a bit of inspiration to draw some toons!

Alan, you can email them to me and I’ll host them on my site for you.
could anybody let me know the e,mail address i am sending my halloween pics too thankyou alan.
Alan, send them to Greg.ny[at]gmail.com, except replace [at] with the symbol @.
By the way, I accidentally deleted someone’s e-mail because it ended up in my spam folder and I only noticed the subject line after clicking “delete all spam.” So if you sent me something, it wouldn’t hurt to send it again (sorry for my mistake).
