How long have you been drawing cartoons?
About ten years
What made you start to think more seriously about making some money out of it?
People were asking for the originals, so I knew there was value there.
Have you done any formal training? If so, what and where?
I have a Bachelors of Fine Art from the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore.
Where was your first cartoon published?
In the Ocean Pines Gazette, which is no longer published.
What materials do you use to create your work?
Bristol paper, #2 pencil & Micron pens.
What hardware and software do you use?
I have a Dell computer, an HP scanner and I use Photoshop.
From where so you draw your inspiration?
News, local and national, and everyday life.
What are some of the resources you’ve found most helpful?
News websites and blogs.
What is the best piece of advice you have EVER been given? The worst?
The best: Draw every day.
The worst: You should try teaching.
Take us through the process you use to create one of your drawings:
I jot down ideas as they come to me. From there I formulate the image and gagline in my mind. Then I sketch it in pencil, make corrections and then ink it.
How long does it generally take to create one piece?
The actual creation on papre takes about 30 minutes.
What do you find the hardest to draw?
Hands and feet.
What do your friends and family think of you being a cartoonist?
They think it’s great.
What do you think is the best part about being a cartoonist?
Feedback from those who enjoy them.
Anything else you’d like to say….
Yesterday I learned I had recieved an award from the Maryland Press Association for one of my editorial cartoons. I don’t know the details yet
