From the Inbox: Cartoons for TV
Published by Matt Glover February 3rd, 2007 in From the Inbox
Karla contacted me last week with a question about how to go about turning her illustrations into an animated show for television. Honestly, I wouldn’t have a clue, but thought I’d post the question here in case anybody else had some insight to share.
Hi Matt, My name is Karla Lee from Sydney and I am an Author of 2 books. I have been told quite a few times that the illustrations I did for my books in March 2003 would be great in cartoon form for TV. Now this is way out of my league (well so was writing a book for that matter), and I was wondering how do you go looking into this further? The books are all around Australia, but my next goal is the US. The books are based on Family life (But from a Child’s perspective of Divorce). I have idea’s for a Cartoon Show but have no idea where to go from here. If you are unable to help that’s ok, or even point me in the right direction I would truly appreciate it.

I’m not clued up on this either, but from speaking to others, Flash seems to be the easiest way to animate cartoons.
Trouble is it costs big bucks to buy it, and I guess it’ll take quite a while to learn how to use it.
Everyone! Grab yourself a library or a bookshop and tackle a copy of the Writers’ and Artists’ Year Book or Children’s Writers’ and Artists’ Yearbook or both (there are many versions of these available. These books have a wealth of information to cover your every question for whatever genre or market you wish to be published in … or, it gives you the tools to approach the right people. Infact every cartoonist/illustratory/artist/writer/should have a copy!
And good luck, Karla, with your venture!
I’ve done a bit with Flash over the years, but never for telly. It’s fairly siple to use, but really time consuming - like most animation I guess!
Not sure if it is the right thing to use for TV.
Thanks for the heads up Bee!
Flash IS the future, and although it costs, make sure you beg borrow or steal…ok , not STEAL to get it and learn it. Its the way that cartoons are made today.
Get use to doing a lot of drawing. ANimation IS hard tedious work. Dont let anyone tell you that its not. Im an animator and i LOVE doing this, but trust me when i say it will feel like you’ve dont thousands of peictures just to see your creation move for thirty seconds…. and you’ll be thrilled!!
Learn the principles of animation before attempting this. There is a lot of good stuff on the web right now and you can learn animation practically for free thiese days but it does take patience. Once you got your skills together start putting together your own films adn post them on the net. Develop your own following and then present your stuff to TV. Good luck.
Hi guys, i think a good app to use would be Adobe After Effects, its pretty much built for TV, has all the ntsc/pal outputs an all an all, should def check it out, go to http://www.isohunt.com and search for it, dont worry if you download a pirate version, Adobe supports learning their products, when the time comes that you feel you can start making profit from the app, buy it from Adobe, be warned, its not cheap
