Cartoon Reflection: Saddam Hussein Hangs
Published by Matt Glover December 31st, 2006 in Cartoons in the News
There are times as a cartoonist when you cannot help but express some of your own questions and confusion about life through your artwork. This is one such time for me.
Saddam Hussein was executed by hanging earlier today and I’ve found myself a little disturbed about how his death unfolded and what it means for us as humans. Yes, he was evil and did some truely horrible things, but does killing him make it any better?
I don’t know. Perhaps the families of those he killed are the only ones who should comment.
What do you think? Leave a link to any cartoon you have drawn in response to Hussein’s death in the comments below.

Executions aren’t supposed to make us any better. They’re supposed to bring justice. Killing him doesn’t rewing the things he’s done, but nothing will. The purpose of execution is to bring upon the biggest punishment allowable. So no, they don’t make us any better, they don’t bring back all the people he’s killed, but it does punish him, and that’s the point.
I’m not sure what my own personal beliefs are- My anti-war and anti-death penalty stance aren’t fixed. I do know that un-natural death is horrible.
The thing that makes me mad about the whole situation is the hypocrisy of the Australian government. When the Bali drug runners are up for similar sentences, there will be diplomatic talks, public appeals and tearful mums in the newspapers. There will be condemnation of the death penalty. But since we don’t like Saddam, we “are pleased” with his death.
There is also a futility to it all- another body for the body count. And it will not stop counting- already Saddam is a martyr with revenge killings and car bombs exploding in Iraq. The circle of violence continues, perhaps even accelerated. Only time will tell.
Punishment, yes, it was needed. But he will not be tried for other crimes, such as for genocide against the Kurds.
He should have been imprisoned for life in the Haig, to die an in-glorious non-martyr death from old age, like Milosovic.
This hanging neither proves nor accomplishes anything.
Hey, Saddam - humiliating, torturing and killing people is wrong. To prove it we’re going to humiliate you, torture you and then kill you.
hi lol
Just picking up on Greg’s comment….
I’d like to think that everything we do somehow contributes to us moving forward and making the world a better place. Even though the punishment was well deserved for what he did, I don’t think killing Saddam makes us or the world any better.
I guess that’s why I’m so uncomfortable with the whole thing.
hey this is really a nice one man.
all of this was just done to make the world a fool.
this was not the real intension . and the execution has not made any thing better for the people there.
