Chewing Pencils January Drawing Project
Published by Matt Glover December 1st, 2006 in Group Projects
I’m taking some time off over January, but rather than leave the blog quiet, I thought it would be a good opportunity to run another Group Drawing Project.
Here’s what you’ll need to do to participate:
1. Create a gag cartoon with the dimensions of 5cm wide by 8cm high (the size to the left). This smaller size requires you to be creative with your artwork and your storytelling. There’s not much room, so you’ll need to be thinking for your gag to work.
2. Post the cartoon on your website or blog and link back to this post
3. Send me an email with January Group Drawing Project in the subject alerting me to your submission. In your email, include a short, one paragraph tip to share with other artists. (I’ll need your name and location too)
It is an open theme for the cartoon, but it must be family friendly.
Submissions are open now and will close at midnight, December 30th 2006 whatever your timezone. The first of the cartoons/tips will appear on January 1st 2007, with a new one each day until the end of the month or until I run out of submissions - whatever comes first! I’ll keep an index alive in this post.
This time round, Matt Golding will be our judge. Matt recently won the Australian Cartoonists’ Association’s Single Gag Cartoon category at the 2006 Stanley Awards. He is published regularly all around the place, has a great style and sense of humour, is a really nice bloke - basically the sort of cartoonist you really like to hate because he has it all! He runs Threefingers Cartoon and Illustration and has a website that can be found here.
Confirming his reputation though, Matt has offered one of his original cartoons as first prize for the winning submission. I’ll post the cartoon in the next few weeks, but let me say now, it’s classic Golding and will look great in your studio. Heck, it would look great in your lounge room for that matter!
So get to work and start spreading the word!

Hi,
I’m new to cartooning, and new to this blog too.
I just read this post and it says:
“Send me an email with January Group Drawing Project in the subject alerting me to your submission. …”
To what email address should I send my URL and short paragraph? Do you mean to simply send it by replying to this post?
Sorry, just a newbie here…
Thanks,
Andre
