Group Project: Christmas Cartoons
Published by Matt Glover October 22nd, 2006 in Group Projects
Submissions for this project are now closed. Surf to this post to see the winning entry.
I’ve said a few times now that a cartoonist needs to be thinking a couple of months in advance when producing work to sell. The aim of this project is to get you thinking about some Christmas cartoons and possible markets in which to sell them. The aim is to produce a Christmas themed cartoon (either single panel or strip) that mentions the word ‘blog’. Whatever else is in the cartoon is up to you, but it must contain the word ‘blog’ to be included in the list.
The only thing you need to participate in this project is a way to display your work on the web and a willingness to both give and receive some constrictive feedback. Here are the ‘rules’…
1. Draw your Christmas themed cartoon, including the word ‘blog’, and post it on your own web site or blog. This must be a new cartoon - not one you’ve done before.
2. Send me a link to your work (email Matt here) before midnight on Sunday 5th November, whatever timezone you’re in. Make sure you include Chewing Pencils Group Drawing Project in the subject line. I’ll update the list on this post as we go.
3. Add a link back to this post to advertise the project and alert your readers of some of the other work being produced. Feel free to invite as many of your drawing friends as possible to participate too!
4. Visit as many of the other entries as you can and leave some helpful comments. Be honest, but do it nicely!
5. Start trying to sell your work. Leave a comment on this post when you’ve been successful!
6. Meet some new cartoonists friends and have fun!
Darren Rowse from ProBlogger will pick a winner for us at the end of the two weeks. The winner will get a gig on Chewing Pencils as the feature artist and possibly a showing on ProBlogger too!
Submissions as of 5th November
Ming from Artmaker submitted Santa on a laptop
Tony from Success from the Nest submitted a Christmas blob
Adrian from Antrageous Antics submitted one of Santa’s ant elves
William from Artist Hideout submitted Santa as a ProBlogger
Ricemutt from Experiments in Finance submitted a Christmas party conversation
Greg from Eeight submitted two cartoons - a long line and a cool sled
Greg from Fauxplay submitted a Desert Kiosk and a Snow Blogger
The two dudes from Mob Motion submitted Santa Strike Squad (The original is worth a mention too - Location, Location and Location)
Chris from Qwertyrash submitted Naughty and Nice and Is Santa Real?
Russ from Toon Blog submitted a Frozen Santa
Bee from Art to Make You Laugh submitted this Christmas Decoration
Dave from The Cartoon Blog submitted a Blog Present
Laura from Out of Context submitted some Blog Reading Reindeer
And I submitted the Changing Face of Christmas…but I reckon all the above ones are better.

If one does have to leave for a key west vacation, one should ideally plan stay at key west hotels as well. A paris hotel would not do. The same travel agents who book czech airlines for you will be more than willing to share great travel tips as well.

remember, remember the 5th of November…. (I couldn’t help myself)
Do you mean the word “blog” has to be in the dialogue of the cartoon? Or can it be anywhere in the cartoon (background, t-shirt, etc.)?
The word can appear where ever you want it to be!
Matt, you’ve been spammed…
Fantastic! I’ll get started tomorrow… I also have a great idea for an application of this…
Can we submit more than one cartoon?
Yeah - more than one cartoon is fine this time!
