Quick Tip: Beat the Boredom - Change Your Style!
Published by Matt Glover October 18th, 2006 in Quick Tips
Back in this post, I confessed to being a little bit bored with my style. While it had evolved slowly over the years, I felt like I wanted to do something a bit differently.
So I decided to give water colour a go. Not real water colour, but it’s digital equivalent using Corel’s Painter software. I already owned a version of Painter that came bundled with my drawing tablet, so there was no need to buy anything extra - all I needed was some time to play.
Well, let me say it’s been one of the best things I’ve done for years. While I still have some learning and tweaking to do, I’m really happy with the look I’ve been able to achieve, and hope it may open up some new markets for me. It’s given me some great ideas for individual cartoons and some larger projects. Basically, it’s given me some new found motivation to produce more work that I would have struggled to do otherwise.
So, if you’re a bit bored with drawing the same old stuff, try something different in terms of style and see what happens!
The image above and in the previous two posts are my firsts attempts at water colour. See this post for the first complete cartoon using the same technique.
