Comic Strip Artist’s Kit
Published by Matt Glover October 13th, 2006 in How to DrawMark Kennedy, story board artist has a great blog called ‘Temple of the Seven Golden Camels.’ Recently he posted an entry about some photocopied sheets called ‘The Comic Strip Artist’s Kit’. He says,
“The other day I got an e-mail from Carson Van Osten, a famous Disney artist who did many Disney Comic Books and created the famous “Comic Strip Artist’s Kit”. It was created to help beginning comic artists deal with perspective problems and other drawing difficulties. I scanned my old xeroxes a while ago. It’s probably the best thing I’ve ever seen about practical staging and drawing for storyboards or comic books.”
Anyway, Mark now has posted high-res copies of each of the pages on his blog, sent to him by Van Osten himself. This is a fantastic resource if you’re into comic strips and it’s worth printing out your own copies for reference.
Mark himself has many pearls of wisdom, so be sure to check out his blog for some great cartoon drawing tips.

The “kit” is fantastic and so is Kennedy’s blog… Thanks for the link!
thanks for the good post… very interesting and helpful! i’ve been an artist for years, and basically apply the same rules to my cartoons. my cartoons though are fairly flat and i try to avoid depth, illusion of space, etc., to keep things simple… but one day i’d like to try a more complex style. i’m a newbie! thus spoke churchpundit!
Wow, I never would have guessed all of that about comic strip design elements. It’s one of my personal goals to sustain a comic strip for more than a few months at least once in my life. Right now it may be one of those goals that is a little ways off…. who knows?
